My cat is my greatest teacher

When I took in my dad’s cat in 2018, I had no idea I would learn so much about life from her. And still, in 2022, she is teaching me how to be present.

When COVID made us all stay home, I had had her for about a year and a half. I vowed I would never have a cat again when my Cleo passed in 2004. But this was my dad’s cat and I took her to take away some responsibilities and worry from my dad.

She has been a blessing to me. Not only is she good company but she reminds me that being present is the most important quality in life to be able to create a future.

When we stay present, we have less worry and overwhelm. We are open to what’s possible with more awareness around where we are right now and less concern about what’s next. After all, one moment feeds another so your access to NOW becomes your future. Take the mental relaxation with you and see what happens next.

When we stay present, we have more access to our senses: what the food tastes like, sounds and music we hear, textures and colors we feel. We see what’s right in front of us without judgement. We listen to what other people are saying instead of trying to figure out how to answer them (ok, this is NOT a cat thing) and we smell the flowers or the catnip without thinking about what happens next. See what I just did there?

When we stay present, we relax and stretch and maybe look for a place to enjoy in the sun.

Feel your feet on the floor and enjoy it for awhile. If your cat wants to join you, consider it a bonus in this moment in time.

Being present is truly a gift.
