Often, I have clients who have created a life that is full of activities and work. A life of “doing” that they feel isn’t purposeful or satisfying. A life that is busy and often tiring.
The metaphor about placing a frog in warm water and slowly heating up the water to boiling always comes to mind when I hear a client talking about how life is too busy and they can’t breathe. Most people don’t intend to fill every minute of their day and, like the water getting warmer and eventually killing the frog, we may be filling our lives up so much that there isn’t any room for us to “be”.
Possible questions might be “ What would you do different if you wanted to breathe easier?” or “What would your ideal life look like?” These can be hard to answer right away because you have created a life that has essentially taken over and the space available isn’t easy to access. But sit with it for a few minutes.
- If you had time that wasn’t full of activities, what would you do?
- What small changes could you make now?
Think about what you would like to create in your life, whether it’s time to read, visit with family, explore nature or learn something new. Or maybe you want to create more freedom for spontaneity!
You have a choice. You have this one life and when you put your head on the pillow for the last time, what will you think about?
Let it be the chances you took to Be more and Do less.
