About a week and a half ago, I got a call from my landlord that they would be renovating my bathroom the following week.
My first reaction was panic. What am I going to do without a bathroom for a week? How do I keep my cat from getting out? How will I survive!!
Within 30 minutes, I was in “I’ll deal with it” mode and by the next day I was completely fine with it, even though my apartment was becoming cluttered with stuff in boxes and displaced furniture from the hallway that the workers needed to be cleared to get in and out of the bathroom.
Deep breath. It’s only temporary and, by the way, this is what it looks like while things are getting done.
This is what it looks like while you’re making progress. It can be messy, disorganized, and chaotic. And uncomfortable.
The discomfort is usually what stops us from making progress. We put off changes because they take too much energy and require us to move stuff. Not only stuff but our routine and thoughts can take a hit when our surroundings have been uprooted. Now the walls and sometimes decades’ worth of dust are exposed. This is good news! Cleaning it brings back a little satisfaction and a growing vision of what it will look like when everything is done!
The first step can be the hardest but once you’ve taken it, keep going! You can always choose to return the furniture just as it was before. Or you can keep moving, and watch your energy grow as you get clearer on what it will look like when it’s done. Will the furniture go back to the same place? Will I have the courage to throw out a few things that have been shoved in the back of the medicine cabinet for years?
I didn’t have a choice on this renovation but it was certainly long overdue and when I chose to think more positively, it got easier to flow with the progress and to be grateful for my amazing new bathroom when it was completed. Even more comfortable than before!
What would you like to upgrade in your life? What’s one step you can take today to move you closer to what you want? Go for it! Your thoughts will lead the way.
