New Year, now what?

A little over a week since the new year. (Happy New Year!!!) And the ads for weight loss, gym memberships, and anti-aging makeup are everywhere! So are the gurus and psychologists with advice on all of the above.

This advice is stuff we have heard every year for, sometimes, decades. Then it all seems to magically go away before spring arrives, just like our resolutions and commitments we so adamantly start the year preaching to ourselves.

Some of us have grown wise. We know that we won’t follow through so we don’t even bother anymore. We eat and drink and nap as much as we want over the holidays and then wrap ourselves in guilt and shame about it after the fact. Then we go right back to the life we lived last year and the year before that, living the same life that got us here.

We ask ourselves the questions: Do I want to do this job anymore? How can I make more money? Have more fun? Relax???? We contemplate and research strategies, try them for a month, and give up. Back we go to the treadmill of our lives, not the kind that will help transform us though, deciding that things will never change because it’s too hard or scary to change.

Does any of this sound familiar? Yeah, me too.

So what do you want to do? It depends on what you want. Remember that your desires are valid. YOU MATTER.

This idea might be helpful: What did you love to do more than anything when you were a child? Was it playing with your friends, reading curled up in your favorite chair or drawing. Maybe it was dreaming of a future you wanted to create or a place you wanted to visit. Something about your childhood may spark an interest or remind you of simpler times. It can be an interesting place to revisit because it isn’t attached to your current routine.

Why? Because we are the energy we create. Whether it’s heavy, buoyant, joyful or hopeless. Decide if your current energy state is where you want to be or if it’s helpful to get you where you want to go. If it isn’t, decide what you want to feel and try reaching for a memory that brings you there.

Just like those ads that come and go at the beginning of every year, you can choose what and if you want to try something to make changes in your life. Tapping into the younger you, without all the adulting, is a great place to start.
