Summer goes by too fast. Even though summer has another couple of weeks, it never gets the recognition and “feel” that the rest of the summer gets because of school. For those of you who aren’t teachers or students, you might remember even if you aren’t living it anymore. So what is the “feel” of summer and how can we make it last longer?
I had a student come to me last week and the first thing out of her mouth was “This is going to be a really hard year.” That’s not a good start! But I get it. We base our future experiences on our memories and what we observe and hear about from others. And so many of us think it’s going to be really hard because nothing worth having is easy.
But does that really have to be true?
What could you do to keep a little summer “feel” in your fall semester, or in your work day? And what if it were easy?
The real challenge is to let go of any beliefs you have that don’t support these questions. Remind yourself what it is about summer that you really love and bring a little of that with you.
Instead of focusing on the workload when you’re not at work or school. Try focusing on putting a little space in your day to take a walk, stare out the window at the scenery, breathe deeply like you’re sitting on a beach, or listen to some music that energizes you or calms you down.
Start your day with a positive intention (this might take a little practice if your habit is to set three alarm clocks and cover your head with a pillow to avoid hearing them). It might be as simple as “This is going to be a good day” or as specific as “I’m going to get this blog done before breakfast” (Yes, that was mine today!)
It all starts with thoughts. Create a thought that feels good and taps into a positive emotion which then gives you the kind of energy that will motivate you to get up and get the day started. Summer thoughts are allowed in as long as they don’t have you rolling over after turning off the third alarm clock 🙂
You have everything you need to create your best day/week/semester/year one thought at a time.
Keep your summer “feel” alive all year long with easy thoughts. You get to choose how your day will begin with your thoughts. After all, “What if it were easy?” is a fun question to play with!
