I subscribe to a referral program for people who are looking for life coaches. Every day the latest referrals are sent out with a variety of requests from relationship to career help. Today, I read one entry and the person wanted to achieve Success.
My first question to this person would be “What is the definition of success for you?” Different people view success differently, from finding the perfect mate to becoming a millionaire. So having an understanding of what success means to you is the best place to start.
The next question might be ” Why is this important to you?” I have gotten an amazing amount of answers to this question. I think the most common one centers around comparison, like wanting more than one’s parents or relatives.
Finally, one more question that might come up would be ” If you had it now, who would you be?” So often we think if we get that thing, our lives will be better but knowing who you are is vital to the result sticking to you and not becoming just another shiny object bought and put on a shelf or just another item checked off a list.
It’s not the success that defines you, but who you become while you’re reaching for that success.
The common denominator in everything you do is you. Who are you and who is ready to emerge and make success a reality? Define it and become it!
