When we were kids, we had goals and we never thought about something getting in the way of the toy we wanted or how high we could stack the blocks. If it was a challenge, we did it anyway. Sometimes we failed and sometimes we succeeded. But the challenge was either met or replaced with something even better.
Then we grew up and many of us became disillusioned with the goals we set. It’s too hard, costs too much, or will require us to learn more to succeed. We want it but aren’t willing to put in the work to get there. So we give up and sometimes stop setting goals altogether.
Is that really what you want? Are you willing to let life happen to you instead of committing to create an outcome?
Let me share a personal story.
In 2018, my life changed drastically when my dad’s wife passed away. I went from being a single independent woman with a full load of performing and teaching to adding caregiver to my daily life. If you’ve ever been a caregiver, you understand that even if you aren’t with that person 24/7, you are always thinking of them and adjusting your schedule to fit in whatever they need.
In the beginning, it was hard and I felt very stressed. But then my dad and I figured it out (that’s a story for another day), freeing me up to get back to a balance between caregiving and my own needs. And I thought “I want to get a life coaching certification” Right? With all I have to do, I want to go back to school?
It never occured to me that it would be hard. I wanted it and I knew I could do it. I had no idea how I would pay for it but I wasn’t worried. I KNEW it would work out.
And it did.
I applied for a loan to pay for school but wasn’t able to get it. Ok, no problem. I called the school and they offered me an alternative plan that I accepted. Not sure how I would make the payments, I still wasn’t worried because I knew it would work out.
Within a few weeks, I had accepted two teaching positions that more than covered the fees and I could manage the schedule. I never missed a payment and received my certicifation in 2020.
The goal was clear and I didn’t think about how. I focused on the goal and everything fell into place.
I have a new goal and the same thing is beginning to happen. Things are lining up and I KNOW I will succeed.
No matter how big or small your goal is, keep it in your sights. Don’t worry about the how because if you are really committed to wanting it, the “how” will fall into place.
Create a vision and know that if you believe you can do it, you will.
