Planting a Seed

Years ago, I had a lovely vegetable garden I played in. I planted beans and peas, tomatoes and peppers and even tried my hand at strawberries but the chipmunks were faster than I was.

Each day I would go out and play in the garden, watering and weeding, staking the tomatoes and checking for bugs.

At one point though I found myself being overly attentive, to the point of sabotage. I was watering too much and digging around the roots too often for the plants to really become strong and healthy. I was trying to control the outcome and it backfired. I forgot that nature can really take care of itself pretty well most of the time.

We can find ourselves doing the same things with our goals and dreams. If we try to control too much, we actually get in our own way! We try to control the direction things go to the detriment of our vision. Maybe we take a job for the money instead of its value, take the quick route to get to work only to experience everyone else having the same idea and, well, it’s not the quick route anymore or, we make choices with a narrow focus on the piece of the outcome that we’re a bit fearful about, like money not our values. Like if you were choosing a brand in the store for it’s cost and not its ingredients.

When you choose a dream, focus on the outcome. Create a mental snpshot of what it will look like and sensorize it. What does it feel, smell, sound, look, and taste like? Focus on a moment in time when you get there. And then let it go.

That’s right. Let it go. You don’t have to hold onto it 24/7. You don’t have to constantly water it, pull it apart and control it. If you can allow yourself to write it down and view it as only a snapshot in time occasionally, you will make room for ideas to come that will get you there. There is so much written on this subject in manifestation books and goal setting so you can try a multitude of excercises and activities. But, remember that if you fill your mind up too much, there’s no place to put new ideas or room to allow for “the present” moment to exist. Being future focused starts with paying attention to this moment.

Plant the seed and nurture it when you feel yourself drifting away from it. And know that if you can dream it up, you can create it with a good balance of nurture and nature.
