Someone posted a meme on Facebook recently that made me laugh out loud. I don’t remember it exactly but it was something like
It turns out I can go to the store, buy myself a birthday cake and eat it. Nobody checks.
HAH! And yet after thinking about it, I realized how true it is that we get stuck in patterns like holidays and weekends….and our own birthday, not realizing that we can actually have the feeling of all of that whenever we want! I mean, what does your birthday FEEL like? After all, you’re going to be this age for a whole year so what difference does it make when and how often you celebrate it? My family used to celebrate Thanksgiving in November when it worked for everyone after that final straw of sitting on the Tappan Zee bridge for an hour on Thanksgiving day. Sure, some holidays are set in stone with relatives, but not all. Find the flexible ones and start there.
Choice is so accessible and yet we don’t exercise it nearly as often as we could. Of course, you can’t change everything to match what you want, but even one change somewhere can make all the other things feel less negative.
Make a plan to follow your own schedule and not the one that has been a pattern for years and no longer works for you and whoever you would like to celebrate with. Make it feel like a celebration and not a burden.
Happy Everything whenever you choose to celebrate!
