I recently decided I wanted to start looking for a house. I have been an apartment dweller for over a decade and, frankly, I’m getting tired of hearing my neighbors.
It occurred to me today that the question I should be asking is not “what kind of house do I want? ” but “what do I think this house will give me?” That got the thought train out of the turnstile…
What do I think a house will give me that I don’t already have? I answered that in a couple of different ways.
Success: I have worked hard all my life but never really stopped to think about whether I had become successful. To me, success is represented in my feeling of contribution and evolution. I have outgrown my apartment and am ready to spread out. That feels like evolution.
Freedom: I am ready to experience the joy and sorrow of owning a home. Everything has a good and bad side. Even success! Look at the rock stars and other famous people. They have fame, money, and things, but do they have freedom, time to themselves and privacy? I want a house that will represent my personal taste and, frankly, whatever I want it to. And I plan on finding a reliable repairman as soon as I move in.
What do you want and what do you think it will give you once you have it? This could be anything: a new car, more money, another job, a relationship, just to name a few. Think about what it is you really want. A new job might bring you more money, but what does having more money mean to you? A relationship might bring you a partner that is like-minded, but why is that important?
If you’ve never made a vision board, this is one way to create it. Get an idea of something you want and create a board that includes words, phrases, images and even colors that bring you the feeling you want to have. It’s a fun project that will put you in the emotional state that you want to create by having whatever it is you want.
Let your emotion lead the way and you might be amazed by the results!
