Keep your Eye on the Ball

A funny saying for anything but sports but think about what it means…everywhere else..

Don’t loose your focus No matter what happens, remember your WHY

It’s easy to get distracted. You know this scenario: You go into the other room to retrieve something you need and you see something you forgot to put away. Then you notice that thing you were looking for yesterday and all the sudden an hour has passed before you get back to where you started! Sound familiar?

It happens to many of us from time to time because we don’t always manage our time well or discipline ourselves to stay in the task at hand. At the very least, the temptation of distraction is stronger than our focus can handle!

Why do we struggle to stay on task? And what can we do to get better at it? Here are some ideas to get you started

  1. Don’t multitask. This is where the ball can get lost altogether. Stay on your task by breaking it into smaller pieces, setting a timer or set aside a portion of your day to regularly work on your task.
  2. If you think of something you need to do that has nothing to do with keeping your eye on the ball, jot it down to take care of after your task session or delegate it to someone else.
  3. If the task feels like busy work and a waste of time, then maybe it is right now. Or maybe you just need to do something else until this particular task feels important again. The ball isn’t going anywhere, you are just taking a break from your staring contest.
  4. Avoid working on a task that is not lining up with your mood. You really don’t want to record a podcast about peace and love when you are angry at the world, right? Stomping on the ball is not an option. Walk away…
  5. Be kind to yourself. I was one of those people that would write a huge list of things I wanted to get done every day amd would be upset when I didn’t get the whole thing completed. Learn what is reasonable to accomplish in a session or a day. This may take some time but once you find what works you will become much more confident and focused. Your eye will stay on the ball, but you will kindly allow yourself to blink once in awhile.
  6. Take note of your accomplishments at the end of your day. Acknowledging successes will make it easier to get up tomorrow and make even more progress.

Play ball!!
